UIB Host: Dr. Xiaotian Zhang

Xiaotian Zhang is a former Rajawali Fellow at the ASH CENTER of Harvard Kennedy School, Harvard University and a Visiting Scholar at the Saïd Business School, University of Oxford. Currently, Xiaotian works as Vice Rector for Science at the University of International Business, Almaty; Research Fellow of International Business at the University of Oulu, Finland and Research Fellow at the Stockholm Business School, Stockholm University, Sweden. Previously, he worked as Assistant Professor in International Business and Entrepreneurship at the University of Southern Denmark, and he served as the Chairman of the Board, EU-China Higher Education Association, the Director of International Cooperation at the University of Oulu, Finland; Deputy Director of the Center for Asian and Emerging Market Research, and Chief Officer of International Relations (Asia) at the Rector’s Office of University of Tartu. He also consulted ministries and other governmental organizations for large-scale cross-country projects. Xiaotian holds a PhD in Economics, an MSc. Econ (Honorary), an MiM, BBA, HEDA and a number of other degrees. Xiaotian lectures at a number of leading universities in Asia and Europe including Shanghai University (SHU), University of Shanghai for Science and Technology (USST) and ISM University of Management and Economics. He conducts his research activities through active cooperation and academic visits to leading institutions in Finland, Denmark, Sweden, China and the UK. As an entrepreneur, Xiaotian has founded six companies and acted as the Chairman of the Board for seven firms in Estonia, Belarus, Finland, Denmark and China. He is also the founder of a leading regional conference “Baltic-China Annual Business Conference (BCABC)” in the Baltic States, as well as the founder of Baltic China Group in Europe, the largest Chinese business community in the Baltic States. Xiaotian Zhang is honoured to be a member of the Academy of International Business (AIB), the European Institute for Advanced Studies of Management (EIASM) and the European International Business Academy (EIBA). He is also a member of the Harvard Club of Beijing and the Harvard Club of Shanghai.

About the Week

UIB-Finland Science & Research Week is a collection of scientific and research activities in the field of economics, business and management studies. By bringing in the most distinguished and internationally well-known scholars to Kazakhstan, this week of events aims at promoting scientific research among young academics and improving research competences of Kazakhstani universities in general. The week is co-organized by the University of International Business (UIB) and Finnish partner universities. Various events will take place during the week, PhD courses, research seminars, brainstorming and experience-sharing meetings, paper development workshops and a cocktail networking event. The week is financially sponsored by the Research Council of UIB and Jean Monnet Activities within the European Union Erasmus+ programme. Thus, we provide free and open access to participants from all universities in Kazakhstan. However, due to the high popularity of our events, we require a pre-registration for each event. And in case the number of registered participants exceeds our capacity, we will select the most appropriate ones to attend. You will receive a confirmation letter for each registered event.

    PhD Course "How to conduct a doctoral research? Session 1: Identifying a
    research problem and question"

    Course description: this intensive course provides participants with knowledge
    on how to conduct a doctoral research according to international standards. It
    covers topics of identifications of research problems and research questions,

    research design, theory building, data collection, research methods, data analysis,
    and research networks. It also illustrates how to write a doctoral dissertation
    and how to publish on international scholarly journals.
    Teaching language: English
    Target: PhD students, young academics, researchers
    Prerequisites: the applicant must be enrolled as a PhD student, or have an
    MA/MSc in Social Sciences.
    Certificate: participants who complete the course will be granted a UIB-Finland
    joint course certificate.

    Description: this paper development workshop aims at helping participants to
    develop their research papers in order to have a better chance of being
    published in international scholarly journals. Participants should come with
    their research paper, proposal or ideas to discuss with the professor in order to
    receive suggestions on how to further develop the paper.

    Roundtable Brainstorming “Academy Journal Development”

    Description: this roundtable meeting invites senior university leaders and
    academic staffs to share ideas on how to better develop science and research in
    Kazakhstan and Central Asia, particularly in development of scientific journals.
    The meeting will cover topics related to the reform of a scholarly journal
    (VESTNIK/Journal of Eurasian Business Studies) and initiative of forming
    Academy of International Business Central Asia Chapter. We believe by creating
    joint efforts, we will be able to better develop our science and research in the
    international context.
